Biblical Counseling
Objectives
- To gain the Biblical and theological understanding of counseling.
- To give students the tools to apply Biblical counseling to the families and individuals in the church.
The Program
Biblical Counseling is a three-year course with one week of resident work per year. In addition to the one-week modules, students complete various reading assignments and homework. During the program students will take the following classes:
- Principles of Biblical Counseling
- Marriage and Family
- Counseling Personal Problems
The Faculty
Professor Carey Hardy graduated from the University of Houston with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1977. In 1984 he sold his pharmacy to go on staff of a Baptist church in Texas as Christian School Principal and Minister of Music. Carey moved to California in 1990 to study at The Master’s Seminary and graduated from there with a Master of Divinity degree. From 1993 through 2006, he served on the pastoral staff at Grace Community Church in the Los Angeles area. Most recently, Carey was Senior Executive Pastor and Personal Assistant to John MacArthur. He also shepherded a Sunday morning fellowship group of young married and young families. In addition, his responsibilities included teaching in the annual Grace Church Shepherds’ Conference, as well as teaching on various issues related to expository preaching, theology, biblical counseling, marriage, and the Christian life at other churches and Bible Conferences around the world. Carey was also an adjunct professor at The Master’s College and The Master’s Seminary. In October of 2006, he became the Senior Pastor of Twin City Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Carey and his wife, Pam, married 31 plus years, have four children.
Professor Stuart Scott is Associate Professor of Biblical Counseling at the Southern Seminary with over twenty-five years of experience in counseling and pastoral ministry, including ten years as associate pastor of family ministries and counseling at Grace Community Church in the Los Angeles area with Pastor John MacArthur. Prior to joining the faculty at Southern Seminary/Boyce College, Dr. Scott served on the faculty of The Master’s College and Seminary in the area of biblical counseling. He is a Fellow and member of the board of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC) and a member of the Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC). Scott is the author of The Exemplary Husband, From Pride to Humility: A Biblical Perspective, and Conflict Resolution (Focus) and is a contributor to the book, Think Biblically (Crossway).
